you're way off base.

and we have the numbers to prove it

scene wise hr is dead. in fact x264 720p releases
as you have seen so far this season are coming out before
the hr's as the hr's are being done as an after thought.

the top group ctu in x264, has even said they may stop
hr altogether since in the scene it is not that tradable anymore.

but then you're not taking into account the fact that it takes
longer to encode a h264 release than it does an xvid release.

this doesn't mean that it takes longer for the end user to get end product. new
torrents are usually very slow, and a size reduction of 1/3 will cut the
download time noticeably.

actually is doesn't take longer if you take cores into account.
the reason is xvid is not good at using more than 2 cores and even
then it does a poor job.

x264 however uses all cores very well. thus you can throw an 8 core box
at an x264 encode and do it faster than xvid.

i think the reason the majority grab the 350mb episodes is
because they play on
standalone divx-dvd players and the larger files don't.

i won't ever watch anything on my pc.

when the time comes when the divx players can handle the larger files i'll
switch.

but until then, i'll just stick to the 350's.

with that said, people are free to download what they want from what's
available.

exactly, most current-gen standalone xvid/divx players will only handle 350mb
specs, and watching a tv show on tv is much better than on 17-20 something
inch pc monitor.

1gb+ for just 1 episode is just a bit too much, (for most people's net
connection & even hdd space)

700mb is currently the best balance of quality & files size & compatibility &
archiving, but
350mb is best for speed of dl & watching on tv (well on hd tvs don't look so
good, but still....)

once the prices of hd or bluray discs & players comes down, then more people
will start buying the tv shows they really like on those formats(for watching
& archiving or keeping for collection) rather than dling 1gb+ for 1 ep.
(especially for people who watches & deletes)

and the bigger the file size, the less seeds & peers there'll be, dl will be
slower, torrents dies out quicker.

btw will there be prison break & heroes hr?

this
makes me a very sad panda

my major problem with 720p is storing it on dvds. i can grudgingly accept that a
single disc can only hold six episodes, but four seems way too little. ah well,
i guess switching over to the higher res is a necessity since no way in hell am
i going back to sd

my problem is this, too. 720p takes much more dvds then hr, and i have to buy
many of them. i don\\\'t wanna spend too much on dvds. my pc barely handles
720p
so i prefer hrs to others. hrs are good at bandwith/quality rate

for some shows with non-hd source i prefer hr if the resolution is 720 x 544,
then it plays on my standalone and can look better than the standard version.
the better audio is a bonus as well.

imo american dad and family guy look better in hr on my standalone, i've
compared them a few times.
